Johns Hopkins Names Alanna Shanahan First Woman Athletic Director

Praising her “passion, energy, and vision” Johns Hopkins University President Ronald J. Daniels announced today that Alanna Shanahan (recently the deputy director of athletics and senior women’s administrator at the University of Pennsylvania) will be the university’s next director of athletics and recreation.

According to the Hub, Shanahan will be Hopkins’s fourth athletic director since 1950, and the first woman to serve in the position.

Dr. M. Grace Calhoun, Penn’s director of intercollegiate athletics and recreation, called Shanahan “one of the very best and most talented colleagues with whom I have had the pleasure to work” and congratulated Hopkins for hiring “a first-class athletics administrator.”
