For the Orioles June 5, seven innings of frustration were erased by a thrilling eighth.
Matt Wieters' pinch-hit go-ahead single off New York Yankees flamethrowing lefty Aroldis Chapman led the Orioles to a 3-1 win, giving the Birds a series victory and improving them to 4-3 during their current 10-game home stand.
The Orioles' last at-bat rally came shortly after a 97-minute rain delay. Before play was halted, the Birds' offense had failed to scratch across a run, going 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position and 2-for-17 with runners on base.
Early on, the Orioles were frustrated by veteran lefty CC Sabathia, who is enjoying a renaissance season and posted a 1.04 ERA during four May starts. Even though the Birds worked Sabathia to the bone -- stringing together many long at-bats and ratcheting his pitch count to 111 in five innings -- they couldn't capitalize on their many scoring opportunities. Sabathia issued six walks and also hit a batter, yet didn't allow any runs.
