The Baltimore Station, a therapeutic residential and outpatient treatment program supporting veterans overcoming obstacles to regain self-sufficiency, announced today it is launching a new program to provide treatment services for those with a gambling addiction. Research shows that those already struggling with substance use or mental health disorders may be at higher risk of suffering from gambling problems.
The two most notable warning signs of gambling addiction are impaired control, difficulty controlling the amount of money or time spent gambling and negative life consequences, emotional, financial and/or relational hardships one faces due to gambling. Gambling addiction can worsen and lead to the inability to pay bills, job loss, and destroyed relationships.
“We have seen an increase in the number of individuals with a gambling addiction in the population we serve, and we think that number is reflective of the general public since there is more access to gambling than ever before,” said John Friedel, executive director at The Baltimore Station. “A gambling addiction can be just as destructive as substance use disorder but may not be as recognizable and oftentimes there are also underlying mental health disorders that also need to be addressed.”
Participants may register to attend the residential program or outpatient program, with up to 12 hours of treatment per week. Treatment is designed to suit every individual’s needs with flexible hours and private or group therapy sessions. Assessments for potential gambling-related problems are available at no cost and there is no fee for treatment.
