David Marcozzi, MD Has Led Unified Command for COVID-19 Response

David Marcozzi, MD, has been named Senior Vice President and Chief Clinical Officer (CCO) for the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) effective March 15, 2021, reporting to Bert W. O’Malley, MD, President and CEO of UMMC. As CCO, Dr. Marcozzi will lead evidence-based programs, practices and activities and establish clear processes to monitor performance against stated goals and assure accountability for performance as measured by quality, service and financial outcomes.

Presently, Dr. Marcozzi serves as the University of Maryland Medical System-University of Maryland, Baltimore Unified Incident Commander for the COVID-19 response, a role he will continue to fill. In addition, he has a prominent role in the state as the COVID-19 Medical Advisor to Governor Larry Hogan. Dr. Marcozzi is also a ProfessorandAssociate ChairofPopulation Healthin theDepartmentofEmergencyMedicineattheUniversityofMarylandSchoolofMedicine(UMSOM) and a fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians.

On top of his work fighting the pandemic, Marco has also played a critical role in launching UMMC’s Mobile Integrated Healthcare – Community Paramedicine program, which has the potential to change the way essential care is delivered in our local communities,” said Mohan Suntha, MD, MBA, President and CEO of UMMS. “His experience is the perfect fit for this clinical leadership role at the Medical Center.”

An experienced professional who excels at leading multidisciplinary teams to address challenges, Dr. Marcozzi has served in the federal government as a senior leader and subject matter expert on health delivery, emergency care, and emergency preparedness. During his federal tenure, Dr. Marcozzi held positions within the United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the White House and was involved with health delivery reform efforts, clinical quality standard and measure development. He is also presently a Colonel in the US Army Reserves.

The UMMC Chief Clinical Officer’s role is to promote and champion quality, foster clinical effectiveness and to engender/ implement a culture of excellence in professionalism and team-based delivery of clinical services. Working with leadership from UMMS, UMSOM, UMMC clinical service chiefs, physicians, nurses and other clinical programs, the CCO develops and implements clinical initiatives focused upon optimizing clinical operations and improving patient access, services and quality/safety outcomes utilizing a data driven, process-focused and outcomes-oriented approach.

Dr. Marcozzi will be transitioning from his roles as the Assistant Chief Medical Officer for Acute Care at UMMC and Deputy Medical Director for Mobile Integrated Healthcare for the Baltimore City Fire Department to assume the CCO position. This week, Dr. Marcozzi is also being presented with the Physician of the Year award from the Maryland chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians. Nicole Baehr, who previously served as Chief of Staff for the UMMS-UMB Unified Command, will join Dr. Marcozzi, serving in the position of Manager of Operations within the CCO’s office.
