In the seventh of its series of SOS webinars, Associated Black Charities (ABC) is offering Baltimore’s Transit is Today’s Redlining for Black and Brown Workers, which will discuss and evaluate transit equity. The October 30th virtual meeting is at 10:30am-12pm. Free registration is currently available at
Topics include theCOVID-19 impact on transit riders and essential workers; why Baltimore’s transit system is broken, and why transit reliant workers are not; and the problems with daily commutes and their economic impacts on workers and businesses.
Speakers for this webinar are Celeste Chavis, Associate Professor in the Department of Transportation & Urban Infrastructure Studies at Morgan State University; Sefu Chikelu, who is a writer, independent bookseller and Baltimore transit rider; Jonathan Moore, Founder and CEO of Rowdy Orbit; Dr. Samuel Jordan, President of Baltimore Transit Equity Coalition; and Jim Shea, Chair of the Central Maryland Transportation Alliance and member of the Central Maryland Regional Transit Planning Commission.
According to Diane Bell McKoy, CEO of ABC, “Associated Black Charities (ABC) understands the importance of transportation on the strength of our economy and our day to day lives. This SOS will shine a light on how structural racism has forced people of color in Baltimore to feel the adverse effects of transit inequity.”
Topics for the meeting will include the need for a consistent effort to invest in Baltimore’s transit system rather than recent disinvestment. In addition, panelists will address the exacerbated impacts for lower income communities of color due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Speakers will share their thoughts on how to evolve the narrative for the present and the future.
ABC works across Maryland as an educator, advocate, and supporter to eliminate race-based structural barriers and advance long-term solutions that create new opportunities for African Americans to thrive financially and build a stronger economy for all.
