Howard Bank Is Named a “Top Team” by The Nation’s Leading Banking Newspaper, American Banker

9/30/20

The award, which is part of American Banker’s 2020 MOST POWERFUL WOMEN IN BANKING™ program, recognizes banks that are not only performing at a high level, but have women in leadership positions.

Howard Bank, a?growth-focused community bank serving businesses, professionals and individuals in the Greater Baltimore area, announced today that it has been selected as a “Top Team” as part of American Banker newspaper’s 2020 Most Powerful Women program which highlights only five teams from banks across the country.

The team recognized by American Banker includes: Mary Ann Scully, CEO & Chairwoman; Jennifer “Jenny” Scully, Senior Vice President, Director of Commercial Banking Administration; Erica Starr, Senior Vice President, Director of Marketing; Deborah “Debbie” L. Matz, Senior Vice President, Director of Treasury Management Services; Katie Sank, Vice President, Director of Project Management; Chandra Klein, Vice President, Director of Branch Distribution, and Katherine Koustenis, Vice President, Chief Compliance Officer.

“We deeply value this recognition from the American Banker,” Mary Ann Scully said.“ As an industry influencer and leader, the American Banker’s consistent support of diversity initiatives in the banking industry have made us and the communities we serve stronger. We are also deeply honored to be one of only five banks in the country so recognized.”

Scully continued, “We believe that our receipt of the American Banker’s Top Team award also recognizes that our success as a leading local business bank is, in no small part, attributable to our own conviction that diversity makes for more creative and resilient teams. To win this award in the year of a global pandemic was the result of that creativity and resilience as each winner’s story demonstrated.”

Gemma Postlethwaite, CEO of Arizent, publisher of American Banker, said, “For 18 years, this list has honored those who have achieved amazing things in the face of countless challenges — individuals who are bravely creating the change we need and driving the industry forward. This year, our honorees have collectively succeeded in moving us forward despite unprecedented obstacles.”

American Banker’s judges reviewed Howard Bank’s performance and growth, but more importantly, they focused on women in senior positions at the bank, their role and impact in guiding the institution, and the bank’s community leadership of diversity, equity and inclusion. Honorees were not only recognized specifically for their efforts to advance the next wave of female leaders; the lists are a reflection of the industry as it evolves, as can be seen in the many new entrants this year.

“There are many women and men across financial services who are doing extraordinary work in a year unlike anything we have ever experienced before,” said Bonnie McGeer, Executive Editor of American Banker and Chair of The Most Powerful Women in Banking and Finance program. “Against this backdrop, where the circumstances have raised the bar for everyone, the women selected for this honor continue to stand out as the best of the best.”
