Sickle Cell Disease Association of America will hold “SickleTini Saturday,” a virtual fundraising brunch with special guests, on Aug. 29 from noon to 1:30 p.m. The event will benefit the association and those living with sickle cell disease.

“SickleTini Saturday” will feature special guest actor Dexter Darden of “The Maze Runner,” “Joyful Noise” and “Cadillac Records.” Child ambassador Kiarra Roseburgh and musical artist Karter Jaymes, guitarist, drummer and singer-songwriter featured in the Teddy Pendergrass documentary “If You Don’t Know Me,” will also join.

In addition, guest bartenders during the event will demonstrate how to make specialty brunch beverages The Sickletini, The Penicillin and The COVID Colada.

Registration (available online) is required with a suggested donation of $25. For more information, contact Natasha Thomas at nthomas@sicklecelldisease.org.

Sickle cell disease is an inherited blood disease causing red blood cells to take a sickle shape, which leads to blockages that prevent blood from reaching parts of the body. As a result, people with sickle cell complications can experience anemia, jaundice, gallstones, stroke, chronic pain, organ damage and premature death. No universal cure exists. Sickle Cell Disease Association of America advocates for people affected by sickle cell conditions and empowers community-based organizations to maximize quality of life and raise public consciousness while advancing the search for a universal cure. The association and more than 50 member organizations support sickle cell research, public and professional health education and patient and community services. (www.sicklecelldisease.org)
