WYPR, an NPR affiliate, has launched The Daily Dose, a podcast highlighting Maryland’s response to the current public health crisis through the rigorous original reporting and analysis from its newsroom as well as the On The Record and Midday teams. Danyell Irby, WYPR acting executive director of news, is serving as executive editor, and Aaron Henkin is the podcast host and producer
The podcast is an evening roundup of WYPR’s latest reporting on Maryland’s COVID-19 response, summarizing essential state and local news. It is also a forum for locals who want to share stories about everyday life during the pandemic. The podcast invites listeners to leave voicemails with their thoughts, questions and insights about life in the COVID-19 era at 410-235-6060. These contributions are included at the end of each episode.
“It quickly became clear that the most impactful thing that WYPR could do for our community during this pandemic was to leverage the power of our newsroom and local programs to create something that would keep Marylanders as informed as possible each day,” said WYPR General Manager LaFontaine Oliver. “Something reliable that was also easily accessible and digestible. We are fortunate to now have podcasting as another vehicle to carry out our important public service mission.”
Episodes thus far have featured updates and stories of importance on a local level, including those focused on City Council candidates scrambling to campaign in the midst of a pandemic, teachers gearing up for a long school shutdown and scammers trying to exploit an already bad situation.
The Daily Dose is available online at wypr.org’s Podcast Central or on the WYPR app as well as on Apple Podcasts and Google Play.
