Maryland Volunteer Lawyers Service (MVLS), the largest provider of pro bono civil legal services to low-income Marylanders, today announced that in the past 12 months, 199 Baltimore City volunteer lawyers provided free services to help Maryland residents overcome their civil legal challenges. If a volunteer accepted more than one case during the year, the number of cases is included in parentheses.

MVLS will recognize the accomplishments of all of its volunteer attorneys during its annual Celebrate Pro Bono awards program on October 15 from 6-8:30 p.m. at the American Visionary Art Museum.

In the past year, 675 volunteer attorneys assisted 5,642 clients through individual representation or assistance at a clinic. Our volunteers closed 3,378 cases and reported 15,376 hours of donated legal services, which are valued at more than $4.6 million.

MVLS’s network of volunteer attorneys provides services for criminal record expungements, divorce and child custody proceedings and other family law matters, landlord-tenant disputes, foreclosure, bankruptcy, estate planning, deed issues, and tax controversy as well as many other civil legal challenges.
