Publication takes home honors for editorial, design, and digital at annual industry awards celebration
Baltimore magazine took home three awards at the 34th annual National City and Regional Magazine Awards (CRMA) competition announced on May 20 at the association’s annual conference, this year held in Minnesota’s Twin Cities.
The CRMA’s Civic Journalism award went to Baltimore magazine editors Ron Cassie and Lauren LaRocca, whose piece “Can H-Town Kick Its Habit?” provided a sobering look at the opioid epidemic in Western Maryland.
Senior editor Ron Cassie said, “We wanted to look not just at the personal toll of the opioid crisis, which continues to worse in Maryland, but the way the epidemic is further tearing apart the fabric of economically challenged communities like Hagerstown. It’s an honor to be recognized for this piece that was many months in making.”
Baltimore magazine also won top prizes for its “Arts District” E-Newsletter and Spread Design for “Fancy Footwork.”
In all, themagazine was a finalist in 12 categories and received mentions for categories like Best Feature Story for “The Shape of Water” by Lydia Woolever, Best Spread Design for “The Great Mancini” and “The Reign of Spain,”Best Feature Design for “Let’s Do Brunch” and “The Shape of Water,” Food and Dining Feature Package for “How to Throw the Perfect Crab Feast” by Jane Marion, Lydia Woolever, Lauren Cohen and Jess Mayhugh, for the best Special Issue, “The (Every) Body Issue,” Best Online Column for “Baby On Board” by Megan Isennock, and Multiplatform Storytelling for “The Shape of Water.”
More than 100 judges from national publications across the country chose the finalists.
