Hyperlocal lifestyle site covering the Maryland suburbs of D.C. expands audience

The Hyattsville Wire, the premier source for lifestyle news along the Route 1 corridor in the suburbs of Washington, D.C., announced that it is breaking online traffic records as it joins Google News in its sixth year online.

Founded in 2012 by longtime journalist and educator Ryan Teague Beckwith and independent public relations consultant Alison Beckwith, the Hyattsville Wire has steadily grown, recently hitting an all-time high in monthly traffic in May of nearly 25,000 views, the same month it joined Google’s database of news sources. The Hyattsville Wire has been cited in Greater, Greater, Washington; Eater D.C.; and UrbanTurf; and its stories have led to coverage in news outlets ranging from WTOP, the Washington Post and the Washingtonian.

“As regional news organizations have scaled back on community coverage, we felt that there was a lot of interesting stories about the Route 1 corridor that were being left behind,” said Ryan Beckwith, a journalist who’s worked everywhere from daily newspapers to national magazines over the past two decades who also teaches at a local university. “We’re proud of the relationship we’ve built with our readers over the last six years and excited to see our coverage draw a wider audience around the greater D.C. area.”

The website covers dining, arts and culture, history, urban planning, and real estate and development in Mount Rainier, Brentwood, Hyattsville, Riverdale Park, University Park, College Park and surrounding communities along the Route 1 corridor.

The Hyattsville Wire also started the Best of Route 1, a reader poll now in its second year, and added a popular calendar where readers can submit their events for free. The site has received hundreds of thousands of unique web visits and has thousands of followers on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

“The Route 1 corridor is one of the most dynamic and interesting areas in the Washington area,” said Alison Beckwith, who runs her own public relations firm. “We’ve enjoyed covering the changes over the past six years and look forward to growing as the area continues booming.”
