WYPR Receives Regional Edward R. Murrow Award for Out of the Blocks

The Radio Television Digital News Association presents WYPR’s Out of the Blocks with a 2018 regional Edward R Murrow Award in the New Documentary category.

WYPR’s Out of the Blocks has been honored with the Radio Television Digital News Association’s 2018 Regional Edward R. Murrow Award for its achievements in electronic journalism. The documentary won the award for its episode “2100 Edmonson,” which presented an in-depth audio portrait of daily life on one city block in West Baltimore.

The episode focuses on the 2100 block of Edmondson Avenue – its residents and their stories. The documentary portrays several locals including a diner manager, a former Nigerian soccer star who operates an auto repair shop, a tire repairman who’s trying to beat a 30-year heroin addiction, and many others. In the episode, producers Aaron Henkin and Wendel Patrick strive to show that though the block is scarred by many instances of violence, it is more than just its history.

“This award is a beautiful validation of our belief that everybody has a story worth sharing,” said Henkin.

The Edward R. Murrow Award recognizes those who demonstrate the spirit of excellence that Murrow set as a standard for the profession of electronic journalism. Out of the Blocks is one of 14 other regional recipients in its category. National winners of the award will be announced in June.

“I am so proud of the tremendous success Out of the Blocks has had in addition to the hard work our producers have put into the show,” said WYPR General Manager Tony Brandon.
