The Saturday Leadership Program to Pathways to Success with $35,000 Walmart Grant

2/15/18

The Greater Baltimore Urban League (GBUL) announces the expansion of its Saturday Leadership Program to Pathways to Success to include a Service CORPS, Urban League Collegiate Club and YouthWorks programsThe Greater Baltimore Urban League (GBUL) launched the Saturday Leadership Program (SLP) in 2013 to foster college and career readiness, positive cultural-identity, and community leadership.  With a generous $35,000 grant from the Walmart State Giving Program, three new college readiness and completion programs join the Saturday Leadership Program to become Pathways to Success

Hosted by a different Baltimore college or university each month, Saturday Leadership fellows attend workshops facilitated by the Urban League’s Young Professionals volunteer auxiliary, tour the campus, engage in team-building with their citywide peers and conversations with college students, and meet a notable Black Baltimorean who has succeeded in their career and contributed to the betterment of Baltimore and beyond.  The Urban League’s Guild volunteer auxiliary engages parents through workshops, monthly chat and chews, and individual communications between sessions.

SLP is a citywide program, drawing fellows from 50 schools.  At SLP, 100% of the workshop facilitators are both college-educated and black.  Ninety-six percent of SLP graduates attend college.

The Urban League Collegiate Club (ULCC) was designed to further support our SLP graduates once they begin attending college. During their 11th and 12th grade years, ULCC fellows participate in a special college preparation track within SLP and receive guidance to prepare college and scholarship applications, FAFSA, and study for the SAT.  The Service CORPs and summer YouthWorks focus on leadership development through the design and implementation of service and program planning projects.

Since 1924 the GBUL has worked to empower communities and change lives to enable African-Americans and other minorities to secure economic self-reliance, parity, power and civil rights.

Walmart Stores, Inc. (NYSE: WMT) and the Walmart Foundation are proud to support the charitable causes that are important to customers and associates in their own neighborhoods.
