--Segment Will Offer Insight Into The Work of NICU; Hospice and MICU Nurses--

“The Art of Nursing,” a 30-minute television special in collaboration with ABC 2-Baltimore (WMAR-TV), will offer a first-hand look at the life of nurses at Greater Baltimore Medical Center (GBMC) and Gilchrist Services.  The special, which focuses on how GBMC HealthCare nurses care for patients in their greatest times of need, will premiere on Wednesday, December 7 at 7:00 PM/ET.

The stories outlined in the special are truthful, fascinating and genuine.  They will provide viewers with an unexpected look into the lives of real GBMC patients, facing actual health and medical issues, and the lives of their nurses who make caring, comforting and providing kindness to their patients their life’s work. “We are truly blessed to have phenomenal nurses in our inpatient units, in our operating suites, in our outpatient areas, our physician practices, and in our hospice. I am very proud of all of them and honored to call them my colleagues,” says John Chessare, MD, President and Chief Executive Officer of the GBMC HealthCare system. “GBMC has always been known for our outstanding nursing care at the bedside of individual patients and their major role in moving us closer to our vision of treating everybody, every time with the care we would want for our own loved ones.”

For several months, WMAR-TV cameras had full access to the day-to-day workings of a nurse within GBMC’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU); Gilchrist Hospice Care and the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU), documenting their ability to provide patients with the highest quality and most compassionate care.

“Our nursing staff is well-trained, smart and resilient. The entire GBMC HealthCare system relies heavily on this extraordinary and dedicated group of people to make sure we deliver the best care to our patients and their families,” says JoAnn Z. Ioannou, DNP, MBA, RN, NEA-BC, Senior Vice President for Patient Care and Chief Nursing Officer (CNO).  “I am proud of all of our amazing nurses and all who were involved in this revealing and emotional program.”

The special will follow real-life nurses:
--Danielle Amussen, RN, a NICU nurse who provides the care to sustain the life one of GBMC’s tiniest patients born at only one pound, seven ounces, and the relationship she establishes with the infant’s mother.
--Delores Williams, RN, a hospice nurse from Gilchrist, who spends her days on the road visiting and delivering medical assistance, offering a sympathetic ear and a hand to hold to a prostate cancer patient receiving end-of-life care at his home.
---Amanda Henderson, RN, a Clinical Unit Coordinator in the MICU, who helps a local high school coaching icon with his arduous recovery and treatment while keeping pace in a busy intensive care unit.

“Nurses are the true unsung heroes and we are honored to be able to highlight their great work and the huge impact they have on the patients and their families,” says Bill Hooper, Vice President and General Manager of WMAR-TV.

In Sept. 2015, GBMC teamed up with ABC 2-Baltimore to create a 30-minute television special that celebrated the hospital’s 50-year anniversary and highlighted its humble beginnings, progress, struggles and triumphs to becoming one of the most prominent healthcare systems in the region.
