Practice is first in Baltimore metro to offer the Tecnis Symfony® Intraocular Lenses
Katzen Eye Group, Maryland’s largest private eye care practice, will be the first practice in the Baltimore metro to offer cataract patients an innovative and unique treatment option, Tecnis Symfony Intraocular Lenses. Approved by the FDA in July for the treatment of cataracts, the Symfony lenses are the only lenses available in the U.S. that provide a full range of continuous, high-quality vision so patients can see clearly at near, intermediate and far away distances, which will decrease their need for glasses following surgery. Katzen will offer the lenses to cataract surgery patients at the practice’s six locations beginning in September.
“At Katzen we are dedicated to providing the most advanced technologies in eye care that will not only improve patients’ vision, but will also enhance the quality of their daily lives,” said Dr. Brett Katzen. “The Symfony lenses are revolutionizing treatment for cataract patients by addressing and correcting issues experienced with the traditional lenses, which will give patients the freedom to go about their daily activities without glasses.”
Nearly 4 million cataract surgeries are performed in the U.S. each year and that number is expected to increase. The National Eye Institute expects that more than half of all Americans by age 80 will either have a cataract or have had cataract surgery. During cataract surgery, the eye’s natural lens is removed and replaced with an intraocular lens. Monofocal lenses, which only allow the person to see at a distance and makes closer objects out of focus, are currently the most commonly used lenses for cataract surgery.
The Symfony lens is approved in more than 50 countries around the world and has been proven to provide seamless day-to-night vision transition; allow patients to see objects sharply and clearly at extended depths of focus; reduce the incidence of halo and glare; and allow patients to focus more clearly by correcting chromatic aberration (inability to focus due to competing wavelengths of light passing through the lens at different angles) and spherical aberration (inability to focus due to the shape of the lens).
