In July 2016 the USPTO launched its Patents for Patients program, which provides a fast-track review of cancer treatment-related patent applications without the need for an applicant to pay an additional fee. This program is designed to cut in half (to 12 months or less) the time it takes for the USPTO to process cancer therapy-related patent applications. This program is also part of the “Cancer Moonshot” initiative announced by President Obama during this year’s State of the Union address.
