Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center Named Lung Screening Center of Excellence

6/30/16

Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center was named a Screening Center of Excellence by the Lung Cancer Alliance (LCA) for its ongoing commitment to responsible lung cancer screening. Low dose CT screening for lung cancer carried out safely, efficiently and equitably saves tens of thousands of lives a year.

“We are proud and honored to be working with Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center as a Lung Cancer Alliance Screening Center of Excellence. Their commitment to practice responsible lung cancer screening will lead to advancements in research and many lives saved. They are an example to follow,” says LCA President and CEO, Laurie Fenton Ambrose.

Designated Screening Centers of Excellence are committed to providing clear information based on current evidence on who is a candidate for lung cancer screening, and to comply with comprehensive standards based on best practices developed by professional bodies such as the American College of Radiology (ACR), the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) and the International Early Lung Cancer Action Program (I-ELCAP) for controlling screening quality, radiation dose and diagnostic procedures within an experienced, multidisciplinary clinical setting.

“Johns Hopkins is dedicated to providing patients with the highest quality care. Low dose CT screening is the only proven method to detect lung cancer at an early and treatable stage. We are proud to be part of this elite group, setting an example for responsible screening practices across the country,” says Lonny Yarmus, D.O., FCCP, clinical director, division of pulmonary and critical care medicine.

The Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center on the Johns Hopkins Bayview campus is a leader in world-class care, treatment and research. Home to the Lung Cancer Program, the Center houses 21 infusion bays overlooking tranquil garden space, 20 clinical exam rooms, a CT simulator, and a linear accelerator for radiation treatments. Johns Hopkins Medicine is committed to creating a Center of Excellence for Thoracic Oncology by offering thoracic expertise from many disciplines: radiology, pathology, interventional pulmonology, surgical oncology, medical oncology and radiation oncology. The Lung Cancer Program’s multidisciplinary clinic and lung cancer screening/pulmonary nodule clinic provide patients with the support and expertise they need to have the best outcomes. As a leading treatment center for lung cancer, Johns Hopkins offers its patients personalized care, specialized treatment and pioneering therapies to extend life.
