Johnson recognized for leadership at Healthworx, CareFirst’s innovation and investment arm.

Healthworx Vice President Ricardo Johnson won the Baltimore Business Journal’Leaders in Health Care Award in the “non-hospital healthcare executive” category. The award recognizes Johnson’s leadership and success creating new avenues for healthcare innovation.

Johnson says, “Healthworx has the resources to support entrepreneurs who share our vision and the energy to partner with businesses who are also driving meaningful change in healthcare delivery.”

Johnson joined CareFirst in 2011 as an associate general counsel and was promoted to a senior advisor role to CareFirst’s president and CEO. This position established Johnson’s deep interest in strategic and operational functions, and ultimately laid the foundation for the creation of Healthworx as the innovation and investment arm of CareFirst.

Healthworx fosters innovation that’s creating a better and more equitable healthcare experience. Johnson adds, “I see Healthworx as the intersection of the healthcare ecosystem and the things that matter to everyone—affordability, access, and quality.”

Healthworx has strategically brought together venture capital, corporate development and commercialization functions. “The team drives innovation,” says Johnson. “But we don’t want to say we focus on innovation for innovation’s sake. We want to provide real value. Our team is prioritizing big challenges and opportunities the healthcare market is facing.”

Johnson says he is grateful for the recognition, as well as the opportunity to build a team culture that “rallies around our vision to co-create or expand health solutions that empower people to live better lives. Especially at this unprecedented time in the healthcare industry, we feel we can make a real difference.”
