Joe Steinbacher

National environmental restoration expert Joe Steinbacher, LEED AP, PMP, has joined Stantec’s natural resources damage assessment (NRDA) team as a senior scientist. Steinbacher’s expertise in negotiating NRDA settlements will provide a new element of expertise to the firm's team of ecologists and economists.

Steinbacher’s experience includes program oversight and coordination of some of the largest Superfund and oil spill damage assessments in the country, including the Lower Passaic River Study Area, the Hudson River Superfund Site, and the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

Over his 20-year career as an interdisciplinary ecologist, Steinbacher has worked with attorney, economists, engineers, and other scientists to evaluate natural resources impacts related to the release of oil and hazardous substances, and to identify restoration options.

A proponent of expedited NRD settlements, Steinbacher has been invited to deliver workshops on cooperative NRDA for the Department of Defense and various industry groups. For his contributions to NRDA projects, Steinbacher was awarded the Department of Commerce Bronze Medal and the US Coast Guard Meritorious Team Commendation.

Based in Laurel, Maryland, Steinbacher will work globally with other NRDA experts at Stantec to support clients that are contending with natural resource liability, by providing strategic guidance on natural resource injury and restoration.
