University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law Dean Donald B. Tobin, JD, was named an Influential Marylander by the Daily Record, a newspaper covering Maryland’s business and legal communities. The annual award honors leaders in the state who have made significant contributions to their fields.

“Lawyers are privileged to be part of a profession committed to seeking justice for all and improving lives in the process,” said Tobin. “It is especially gratifying that the three of us honored this year join a large group of Maryland Carey Law alumni and faculty whose leadership has also been recognized by receiving this award.”

Donald B. Tobin is a legal educator, tax attorney and one of America’s leading experts on the intersection of tax law and campaign finance law. Before assuming the deanship at Maryland Carey Law in 2014, he served on the faculty at Ohio State University Moritz College of Law as a professor and associate dean and as an appellate attorney in the Tax Division of the U.S. Department of Justice. He began his career in the US Senate, serving as a professional staff member of Senator Paul Sarbanes (D-MD), the Senate Committee on the Budget and the Joint Economic Committee of Congress. He is the co-author of Federal Income Taxation: A Contemporary Approach (West 2014), an interactive casebook, and has testified before the Federal Election Committee and the U.S. House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Oversight.

Two alumni of Maryland Carey Law also were named Influential Marylanders this year. Courtney Capute, ’86, co-chairs Venable’s Hospitality Sector Initiative, serves as partner-in-charge of the Baltimore office and as a member of the firm’s Board. Andrew V. Jezic, ’94, is lead partner at Jezic & Moyse, a criminal defense firm in Wheaton.

The 2017 Influential Marylanders awards will be presented March 23 at a reception and dinner at The Grand Lodge of Maryland in Cockeysville.
