Johnson to retire effective January 31

Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz announced today that Terrence B. Sheridan will return as Baltimore County Chief of Police, effective with the retirement of James W. Johnson on January 31. Sheridan would serve the remainder of Kamenetz's term ending December 2018.

Sheridan served 11 years as the County’s police chief from 1996 to 2007 prior to returning to the Maryland State Police as Superintendent from 2007 to 2011. Sheridan previously served in the Maryland State Police for 30 years. He is currently serving as Law Enforcement Advisor to the United States Department of Homeland Security, Intelligence and Analysis Division.

In announcing the move, Kamenetz stated, “Jim Johnson served this County faithfully and honorably for 38 years, and we are grateful for his service. However, at this time we choose to go in a different direction, and I wish Chief Johnson well. I'm excited that Terry Sheridan has agreed to return as Chief. His impressive resume and impeccable reputation will assure that we continue to maintain the highest standard of service that we expect from our police department. "

Kamenetz will submit Sheridan’s appointment to the County Council for confirmation, and he will serve as Acting Chief effective February 1.
