On May 31st , KatzAbosch principal Josh Sutherland, CPA and KatzAbosch manager Timothy Redmond, CPA participated in the Junior Achievement (JA) “JA in a Day” program, presenting the “JA Our Nation” program to a 5th grade class at Martin Boulevard Elementary School in Baltimore County. The “JA Our Nation” program, typically taught over a course of several weeks, was presented all in one day, and instructed students on how the national and world economies work together to produce and sell products, the risks and benefits to being an entrepreneur, and the concept of innovation in business.

The “JA in a Day” program is offered through Junior Achievement of Central Maryland. The programs are available for all elementary grade levels, and these programs seek to provide engaging activities for students’ as they learn about entrepreneurship and financial literacy from community professionals and leaders. According to the nonprofit organization, this one-day event is a great way to impact the community while providing employees with a team-building experience. One to two volunteers are assigned to a classroom to present a series of interactive, grade-specific lessons, while teachers enjoy the benefits of having a business professional in their classroom.

“We are thrilled to have had this volunteer experience through Junior Achievement,” said Josh Sutherland, KatzAbosch principal. “The students were great and thoroughly engaged. We were extremely impressed with how quickly they learned, and how well they applied the concepts to practical activities and examples offered as part of the course. I look forward to working for one of these kids some day!"

Timothy Redmond voiced a similar reflection. “Teaching young people about the global economy is very important, especially in today's business environment,” said Redmond. “The more we can provide opportunities for students to visualize beyond the bounds of their current situations, the better we become with inspiring their dreams. I am glad to be a part of this program to help drive change in their lives.”

Katzabosch is committed to improving the financial literacy of the communities we serve. The JA in a Day program is one of many ways we add to the knowledge and understanding of financial matters of people of all ages. The firm will continue to support Junior Achievement and their programming later this month by participating in their annual Bowl-A-Thon fundraiser on June 23rd at the AMF Timonium.
