Hotel Revival Commemorates Black History Month

1/25/21

Virtual discussions centered around cooking, cocktails and community wellness will be streamed on Revival’s Facebook page throughout February

In celebration of Black History Month and Black businesses, creators, leaders and community members, Hotel Revival, the award-winning hotel in the heart of Baltimore’s historic Mount Vernon neighborhood, will host a series of virtual conversations via Facebook throughout the month of February with a focus on Black-led food and beverage businesses.

“We couldn’t think of a better time to bring together these inspirational Black business leaders for intimate conversations about their journey— the challenges they’ve faced, their greatest successes and what is yet to come,” said Jason Bass, director of culture and impact at Hotel Revival. “Given the pandemic, we have decided to host these conversations online, opening the programming to a larger audience who can tune in wherever they want, whenever they want.”

Throughout the month, Revival will stream virtual conversations on the hotel’s Facebook page (facebook.com/revivalbaltimore) with:

Owner of “Fish Net” Keyia Yalcin and Founder of “A Tribe Called Run” William Walker

Bass will moderate a conversation on sustainable food and community and wellness as they relate to running with guest speaker Keyia Yalcin, a Howard University alumna from Baltimore, and co-owner of Fish Net, a small seafood restaurant located in Mount Vernon Marketplace, and William Walker, founder of “A Tribe Called Run,” a Baltimore-based running club.

In addition to the virtual conversation, on February 20, 2021, A Tribe Called Run will host a three-mile race in Mount Vernon, beginning and ending at Revival. During the race, Fish Net will sell pre-packaged food and collect donations to provide meals to residents in East Baltimore.

Founder of Learning to Live (LTL) Bianca Willis and CEO of La Fête Rosé Donae Burston

Bianca Willis, founder of LTL, an organization that helps transform lives and provide opportunities for young people who otherwise might never get the chance, and Donae Burston, founder and CEO of La Fête Rosé, a premium rosé wine label geared towards multicultural consumers, will come together for a conversation moderated by Bass to share information about their work and discuss a new program at Revival designed to support the businesses. The program involves Topside donating a portion of all proceeds from every purchase of La Fête Rosé in 2021 to LTL. Bottles of rosé will be available for purchase at the front desk of Hotel Revival. The grand total will be presented to LTL at the end of the year.

Representative from Uncle Nearest and Co-Founder of CAnE Collective Aaron Joseph

Bass and a representative from Uncle Nearest, a whiskey distillery started by a former slave who became Tennessee’s premier master distiller, will discuss the riveting history of the brand and the different whiskies they produce. Aaron Joseph, co-founder of CAnE Collective, a consulting agency focused on helping spirit companies develop spirit marketing opportunities in the Washington Metropolitan area, will also join the conversation and talk about his journey in bartending and entrepreneurship. The two speakers will showcase their bartending skills by demoing cocktails comprised of Uncle Nearest whiskey and mixers produced by CAnE Collective. Those interested in following along with the demo can purchase the ingredients on Revival’s website.

CEO of Breaking Bread Kim Ellis

Kim Ellis, the CEO of Breaking Bread, a family-owned restaurant in Baltimore’s Pigtown neighborhood that operates on a “mission over money” model, will join Bass in a discussion about her business, passion for cooking, community efforts, and a newly formulated partnership between Breaking Bread and Revival designed to benefit the surrounding community in need.

“In support of Revival’s goal to engage more local and Black-led businesses, we are thrilled to be sharing these speakers’ stories and to work with them in developing unique partnerships that will go beyond Black History Month to raise awareness and strengthen their businesses,” said Bass.
