SEED School of Maryland Appoints Karen Barnes and Denise Andrews to Board of Trustees

SEED School of Maryland (SEED), a tuition-free, statewide, college-preparatory, public boarding school announces the appointment of two new members to its Board of Trustees for a three-year term (2020-2023). Joining the Board of Trustees are Karen Barnes and Denise A. Andrews.

The SEED School of Maryland (SEED Maryland) is Maryland’s first and only public, college-preparatory boarding school, offering an extraordinary learning and living experience in preparation for college and beyond. SEED Maryland is located in Southwest Baltimore and serves students who could most benefit from a 24-hour learning environment. SEED Maryland opened in 2008 and graduated its first class in 2015. SEED New Board Member Bios

Karen Barnes

Karen Barnes is a Program Director for New Leaders, a national non-profit organization which prepares educational leaders to deliver breakthrough results in America's highest-need schools and advocate for policies that enable great leaders and their students to thrive. Previously she served for nine years as Principal at Southwest Academy Magnet School for Science and Engineering, a UMBA Professional Development School, and as Principal at Deer Park Magnet Middle School. She was honored with the NAESP National Distinguished Principal of the Year Award in 2013, the Woman of Color Educator of the Year Award in 2015, and the Magnet School of America Principal of the Year Award in 2016.

Denise A. Andrews

Denise Andrews is a volunteer Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) appointed by the Baltimore County Circuit Court. As a CASA, she advocates for children in need of assistance who enter the court system due to alleged abuse or neglect. Previously, she served for 27 years as University Counsel and Senior Counsel at the University of Maryland College Park. During her tenure, she advised vice presidents, senior administrators, faculty, and staff on matters concerning all aspects of University business, including student programs, student affairs and other student issues, non-discrimination and affirmative action, research, employment and human resources, conflicts of interest, fiscal irregularities, risk management, procurement, and compliance with federal and state laws and regulations. Before joining the University of Maryland, she was a lawyer in private practice with a Baltimore law firm.
