Site represents third Howard County location for private, independent school
Lee & Associates | Maryland has brokered a lease with Brookfield Christian School for 5432 square feet of space within 5890 Cedar Lane, a free-standing, single-story building situated in the Columbia section of Howard County, Maryland. This represents the third Howard County location for the private, independent school, joining sites in Clarksville and Maple Lawn. Bill Harrison, Senior Vice President for Lee & Associates and Austin Eber, Associate for Lee & Associates represented the landlord.
Established in 1998, Brookfield Christian School provides early childhood education programs for infants through the kindergarten level, as well as supplemental before-school and after-school education and activities for school-aged youngsters. The curriculum covers the domains of language arts, mathematics, personal and social development, social studies, science, math and science and physical development and health education.
Situated on an approximate one acre parcel that includes an outdoor playground area, the building is configured to support an educational use with five separate classrooms, two offices, child-size bathrooms in each classroom and a fully-equipped library and kitchen. The building was formerly occupied by MKD Kids Learning Center. Fronting Cedar Lane and located near Wilde Lake High School, the site is within close to MD Route 29, the major north-south highway connection serving Howard County.
Nearly 70,000 people, with a household income approaching $120,000, reside within a three-mile radius of the site. The average house value in the immediate area is more than $450,000 and the average homeowner is 39 years of age.
“We received this assignment in early spring when COVID restrictions made it difficult to make site visits in person but, based on the existing interior fit-out of the building, we immediately fielded extremely strong interest from several daycare and children education groups,” explained Bill Harrison of Lee & Associates | Maryland. “Quality daycare and education are critical for families, especially now, when school routines are disrupted and young people need additional guidance and nurturing. The need is growing and we see industry sector rapidly expanding.”
“We were searching for another location not far from our other two sites and this building made perfect sense on many levels based on its former use and position within the community of Columbia,” stated Cheryle Johnson, Owner and Administrator of Brookfield Christian School. “The demographics surrounding the building was exactly what we needed and the existing school layout suits our purposes. Our concept uses self-contained classrooms instead of open spaces and we only need to make minor changes. It is an extremely quaint building.”
