The Shirley Povich Center for Sports Journalism at the University of Maryland Philip Merrill College of Journalism on Tuesday announced its new advisory board. The board will assist in further establishing the center as a leader in sports-journalism education and public discussion of sports, politics, culture, business, race, gender and ethics.
Advisory board members represent the most recognizable brands in sports and media: The Washington Post, USA Today, ESPN, FOX Sports, Sports Business Journal, SiriusXM, MSG Network, the NFL and Dick’s Sporting Goods, among others. They include some of the most familiar personalities in sports media. Fourteen members of the board are University of Maryland alumni.
“I’m excited to begin working with the new board,” said Mark Hyman, Merrill College’s inaugural George Solomon Endowed Chair in Sports Journalism and leader of the Povich Center. “It’s a diverse group that’s committed to the future of the Povich Center. I’ll benefit greatly from the advice and participation of each member, particularly in an unprecedented time for sports and media. I’m pleased that so many on the board are Terps — graduates of the University of Maryland and Merrill College.”
The Povich Center serves Merrill College students, professional journalists, the university and greater community through its panels, workshops and support of the college’s academic offerings, as well as research and analysis.
Legendary Washington Post sports reporter Shirley Povich was an eyewitness to the most significant sporting events of the 20th century and his fearless reporting took on questions of race, religion and gender. The Povich Center hopes to lead a new generation of sports journalists to view and chronicle events in sports.
The center serves as a launching pad for UMD students to learn, actively participate in and develop the journalistic skills they need to meet the challenges of new media that face the next generation of sports journalists.
The center was made possible by a $1 million challenge gift from Povich’s children – Maury, Lynn and David – as well as support from other involved parties.
