Pessin Katz Law, P.A. (PK Law) has launched a podcast series entitled Ultimate Planning that will deliver emerging estate planning issues through interviews with local and national experts in the field. PK Law Attorney Ashley Nelson-Raut conceived the idea for the podcast after a search concluded that no Maryland law firms had previously produced a similar estate planning podcast series. Together with attorney, Kevin Bress, a managing director at PK Law, the pair intend to produce monthly podcasts that will be distributed among such host sites as Apple, Google and Spotify.

The series is guest-driven with the inaugural podcast featuring nationally-known CEO, Jeff Zucker, Founder of ADVault, a Dallas-based company. ADVault developed a digital platform for Marylanders who create an account with MyDirectives.com where they can upload their medical directives for all Maryland hospitals and health care providers to access.

Future episodes of Ultimate Planning produced by Bress and Nelson-Raut will follow the same Question and Answer format in order to make the series casual and entertaining. “It is important to make our audience feel like they are sitting in the room with us and casually listening,” explained Nelson-Raut. For their elder abuse and financial exploitation podcast, the attorneys plan to invite a Maryland Assistant State’s Attorney who prosecutes those cases. “We think our more technical subjects like business succession planning, intra-family litigation and Medicaid planning will be easier for consumers to digest when presented conversationally, rather than in a lecture format,” Bress added.

Both attorneys have concentrated their practices in the areas of elder law, estate planning, and decedent’s estates. While Bress has more than 35 years of experience in the field, he credits Nelson-Raut for conceiving this wholly-new approach to delivering the message to a younger and new audience via podcast. Nelson-Raut joined PK Law less than two years ago upon graduation from the University of Baltimore Law School.

“When listening to the multitude of legal talk shows on the radio, they typically are broadcast for a full hour and are filled with commercials,” she observed. “I believe listeners would prefer shorter 20-minute blasts that could be easily digested during one leg of a morning commute to work.”

Bress, a former instructor at the University of Baltimore Law School for 15 years, indicated he would regularly lecture for two and one-half hours and noticed “students tended to zone-out midway through the class seminars.”

“We are certain that the podcast venue for delivering quality estate planning material is virtually untapped, but it is critical need to make the material interesting and entertaining to attract regular listeners,” he added.

The estate planning podcasts will also be available for download at the PK Law website www.pklaw.com.
