"The officers of the HFSA and our Board of Directors are thrilled that John Barnes has agreed to become our next CEO. He will lead HFSA as we grow with expanded membership, international collaborations, research and educational programs," said HFSA President Randall C. Starling, MD, MPH, FHFSA.

Barnes joined HFSA in 2018 when he was appointed as the Interim Chief Executive Officer.

"I am excited about the opportunity to serve as the CEO of the Heart Failure Society of America," said Barnes. "HFSA is a dynamic, growing association with strong member leaders who are committed to the HFSA membership and the patients they treat. I look forward to working with the HFSA leadership and the HFSA staff in the years to come."

Before joining the HFSA, Barnes was President of Barnes Association Consultants, an association management company which focused on strategic planning, governance improvements and Board assessment and development. Previously, he was the Chief Executive Officer for the American Physical Therapy Association. Prior to the APTA, Barnes served as the Deputy Executive Director of the American Academy of Dermatology. Barnes also has extensive public policy experience through his years serving on Capitol Hill, as Chief of Staff to U.S. Representative Greg Ganske of Iowa and Special Assistant to U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley.
