Howard Bank, a growth-focused community bank serving businesses, professionals and individuals in the Greater Baltimore area, announced today that chairman and chief executive officer Mary Ann Scully has been honored with the Whitney M. Young Jr. Service Award by the Boy Scouts of America.

The award recognizes outstanding participation by an individual or organization in the development and implementation of Scouting opportunities for youth from rural or low-income urban backgrounds.

“The Boy Scouts of America plays such an important role in our country by teaching young people leadershipskills, responsibility, dedication to community, and preparing them for life,” Scully said. “Receiving the Whitney M. Young Jr. Service Award is a huge honor and underscores the fact that every young person should have an opportunity to be a Scout and have a safe place to learn, play and expand their horizons.”

Scully received the Howard County Good Scout Award in 2011 from the Baltimore Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America.

Founded in 1910, the Boy Scouts of America prepares young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law. The Oath, in part says a Scout should “keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight.”

In addition to Scully, David Wilson, president of Morgan State University, will receive the Whitney M. Young Jr. Service Award.

“Mary Ann Scully embodies the values Scouting sets forth not only with her support of our organization, but from the example she sets in our community” said Bruce McMillin, council president of the Baltimore Area Council, Boy Scouts of America. “She is a role model for young people today and throughout their careers. Weare thankful for her continued support.”

Scully has been in the banking industry her entire life, holding more than 30 years of executive experience in the Maryland marketplace. She founded Howard Bank with three colleagues in 2004, focusing on the local Howard County community. Through client reach, community impact, and an acquisition, Howard Bank now operates throughout the Greater Baltimore region with $2.1 billion in assets and 21 branches.

Aside from her commitment to the Boy Scouts of America, Scully is active in several organizations. She is a trustee of the board of the Associated Catholic Charities; a trustee and corporate campaign co-chair of the Kennedy Krieger Institute, and a board member of the Greater Baltimore Committee. Scully has also been recognized as a “Distinguished Woman” from the Girl Scouts of America.
