Dr. Steve Holtzclaw, MD, FACEP
Alteon Health today announced the appointment of Steve Holtzclaw, MD, FACEP, to serve as Chief Executive Officer, effectively immediately. Chris Krubert, MD, who served as CEO on an interim basis, will resume his role as a member of the Board of Directors.
"The Alteon physician leadership and Board of Directors patiently conducted our search for a talented and enthusiastic physician-leader for the permanent CEO position," said Dr. Krubert. "We were pleased to see the Alteon story resonate strongly in the market, and we met numerous healthcare leaders who were drawn to our story and vision. We are now delighted to welcome a leader of Dr. Holtzclaw's caliber to Alteon."
As an accomplished physician and veteran leader in the physician services industry, Dr. Holtzclaw has led the transformation of hundreds of emergency medicine, acute care, ambulatory care, and anesthesiology programs nationwide. Prior to joining Alteon, he served most recently as President of Hospital-Based services for TeamHealth until late 2017. In this role Dr. Holtzclaw was responsible for leading the expansion and progress of healthy business relationships with hospital clients, financial solvency and revenue generation, clinician relations, and organizational development.
With an extensive clinical background, Dr. Holtzclaw began his career as an EMT/paramedic at Helene Fuld Hospital in N.J. from 1979-1990. He received undergraduate degrees in business administration and biology before attending medical school at the University of Maryland, where he graduated in 1990. He completed his emergency medicine residency training at Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Holtzclaw was named Chairman of the Emergency Department at The Good Samaritan Hospital in Baltimore, Md., in 2001. He has over 20 years of practice history at Johns Hopkins University, where he is currently responsible teaching medical students and residents at the bedside as a member of the emergency medicine program faculty. An esteemed mentor and colleague, Dr. Holtzclaw continues to practice clinically and is uniquely qualified to lead Alteon's growing practice as the group strives to become the preeminent physician-led provider in the industry.
"It was crucial that Alteon Health remain physician-led at every level of our organization, including the c-suite and I am excited to partner with this first-class group of leaders and clinicians," said Dr. Holtzclaw. "The healthcare landscape has changed dramatically in recent years, leaving many groups increasingly focused on the business side of medicine, oftentimes to the detriment of their patients. As a practicing emergency medicine physician, I look forward to building upon Alteon's clinically-driven culture that promotes high quality patient care and collaboration between passionate, team-minded coworkers."
