Executive Chef Thomas Zippelli Opens Highly Anticipated Farm-to-Table Restaurant at Hobbit’s Glen Golf Course on October 15
The Turn House, the highly anticipated farm-to-table restaurant driven by Howard County’s renowned hometown chef Thomas Zippelli, will open its doors on Saturday, October 15, 2016 at Hobbit’s Glen Golf Course. Formerly the Coho Grill, The Turn House provides a much needed culinary showcase of locally-sourced, seasonal cuisine in Howard County residents’ backyard. The venue also offers a casual environment suited for foodies and families alike, as well as an extensive wine, beer and seasonal cocktail selection.
Owner and Executive Chef Thomas Zippelli is a culinary force, having honed his gourmet talents in some of the country’s most prestigious kitchens including two three-Michelin Star restaurants. His past successes include serving as poissonier at Eleven Madison Park in New York City under Chef Daniel Humm, and as saucier at the famed French Laundry in Napa Valley under Chef Thomas Keller. A graduate of Johnson & Wales University, Zippelli continues this tradition of quality with his first restaurant The Turn House, and offers a destination that appeals to gourmands as well as locals searching to enjoy a delicious meal prepared with the freshest ingredients.
“My dream was to return to Maryland and open a restaurant in my hometown,” said Zippelli. “70 percent of our menu is sourced locally within a 30-mile radius of the restaurant and I love partnering with local businesses in Howard County, such as Elioak Farm for produce and Triadelphia Lakeview Farms for its 100% grass-fed beef. My mission is to serve seasonal and sustainable food that our guests can trust and enjoy.”
For lunch, diners can enjoy the Willow Bottom Burger made with Triadelphia Lake View Farms grass-fed beef, pimento cheese dip and Jimmy Nardello mayo ($14); Brisket Poutine with Willow Bottom Beer, smoked jalapeno and Tillamook cheddar, ($11); and Seared Scallops with polenta, corn, pickled peppers, fennel and purslane ($24). Dinner starters include imported Italian Burrata with roasted pumpkin, grilled chicory, Belgian endive, fried sage, pumpkin seed vinaigrette and grilled bread ($13); theBeet Salad featuring an assortment of local beets, apples, Romaine, chives, parsley and Crème Fraiche dressing (14); and Smoked Arctic Char with cucumbers, hard boiled eggs, lemon aioli, capers, pickled onion, grilled bread and horse radish ($15). Entrees include Cut Of Our Local Pork with roasted apples, fried Brussel sprouts, carrot puree, toasted pecans and raw Brussel leaves ($25); Whole Bronzino with bacon, celery, onion, parsley, potato and white wine ($32); and New York Strip with roasted shallots, grilled endives, green onion and confit potatoes ($30). Desserts are prepared in-house daily by pastry chef Jessica Banner and include Butternut Squash Panna Cotta with cinnamon ice cream, pumpkin seed granola and candied bacon ($8); Apple Crisp with cardamom ice cream and whiskey caramel; and Dulcey Chocolate Mousse Bomb with parsnip ginger puree, hazelnut gelato and hazelnut tuile ($8).
Keeping with the restaurant’s focus on seasonality, those looking for an after-work drink can belly up to the bar and enjoy a selection of seasonal cocktails and craft beers by the bottle. An assortment of local Maryland beers rotate seasonally on tap, such as Manor Hill and Willow Bottom Beer which is brewed exclusively for the restaurant by Heavy Seas.
The restaurant was recently re-designed by Kirk Designs and Gyc Group, and features many distinct areas throughout the space. Upon entry, guests are greeted by a cozy fireside foyer featuring plush armchairs and vibrant artwork before arriving at the hostess station located in the bar area. The 52 seat bar and lounge includes a 12 seat bar, multiple high tops and a few fireside tables where guests can enjoy an assortment of bar bites as well as order from the full menu. Adjacent to the bar area is the 60 seat dining room featuring a beautiful “living wall” located above the tables, highlighting decorative moss, ferns and succulents. From spring through autumn, patrons can relax on the largest covered outdoor patio in Howard County, complete with fire pit and gorgeous views of the golf course and trees beyond. The Turn House also features a large event space, perfect for wedding receptions and private events, featuring panoramic views and a small outdoor garden, which hosts seasonal events.
