Smith, Gildea & Schmidt, LLC (SGS), a regional law firm with offices in Towson and Baltimore, is pleased to announce that one of its attorneys, Stephen J. Nolan, was presented with the Will Ross Medal for Outstanding Volunteer Accomplishments & Impact by the American Lung Association at its annual dinner on June 21 in Chicago.
The Will Ross Medal is the highest honor bestowed on a volunteer who has made a significant contribution to the prevention and control of lung disease.
Nolan has been a longtime volunteer for the association, working on last year’s merger of eight regional lung associations into one nationwide corporation with net assets of over $143 million and previously served as its National Board Chair. Highlights of his tenure include meeting President Obama when he signed the Tobacco Control Act; speaking at Mayor Michael Bloomberg and T. Boone Pickens’ announcement of New York City’s use of Clean Energy for some of its 30,000 vehicles; and testifying twice before Congress for increased funding of NIH.
“I am deeply humbled by this award and grateful for the time I can give to advance the work and mission of the American Lung Association,” said Nolan. “Moreover, I am proud to work with a law firm that truly values and supports community service.”
Giving back to the community is an integral part of the culture at SGS. In addition to Nolan’s volunteerism with the association, he is currently the Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Community College of Baltimore County, where he leads a Board of 15 trustees who are appointed by the Governor to oversee the largest community college in Maryland with over 62,000 students each year, six campuses and an annual budget of $261 million.
He is also a Board member of the Sandra and Malcolm Berman Charitable Foundation, Inc., which supports GBMC, LifeBridge Health System, Stevenson University and many other healthcare and educational providers in and outside of Maryland.
At SGS, Nolan concentrates his practice primarily in the areas of business litigation, catastrophic personal injury and wrongful death actions, and trusts and estates litigation in State and Federal Courts. Throughout his career, he has been involved in a wide variety of complex litigation, class actions and other cases. Nolan has received numerous awards throughout career, including being named to the Super Lawyers list from 2007-2019.
