The 2016-17 season didn't start well for the Coppin State women's basketball team.
Faced with a brutal nonconference schedule that included such top-tier programs as Virginia, George Washington, West Virginia, Stephen F. Austin, Syracuse and Miami, the Eagles went winless in 12 starts against their nonconference opponents. Coppin State didn't post its first victory until Jan. 4, when it beat visiting South Carolina State.
But Coppin State, which is guided by first-year head coach DeWayne Burroughs, has come alive during the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference season. After a 59-47 victory at Savannah State Feb. 20 that extended their winning streak to three games, the Eagles are tied for fifth place with Florida A&M in the 13-team MEAC with an 8-6 league record. With a victory against host Morgan State Feb. 27, Coppin State will clinch a winning conference record for the 12th time in the last 14 seasons.
