On Feb. 11, just seven days shy of the Towson men's basketball's senior night game against James Madison Feb. 18, the unthinkable happened. One of the key players on head coach Pat Skerry's team, senior forward John Davis, was shot in the knee near his hometown in Philadelphia.
Only hours before, the Tigers had defeated Drexel, 69-65, a game in which Davis played a key role, scoring 14 points and collecting 10 rebounds. That win was Towson's ninth in its previous 10 games. Davis had asked for and received permission to stay in Philadelphia following the game, because his family had planned his 9-month-old son's christening the following morning around Davis' return to Philadelphia.
While he was able to attend the christening, what happened the night before ended his college basketball career and, if not for some divine providence, could have easily ended his life.
