When Maryland star junior guard Melo Trimble drained two 3-pointers at the end of the first half to give the Terps a six-point lead against Wisconsin at halftime, the possibility of Maryland securing two big road wins in five days became very real. But the Badgers, who were coming off two consecutive losses, opened the second half on a 20-6 run en route to a 71-60 win.
The Terps (22-5, 10-4 in Big Ten play) fell to third in the conference, as Wisconsin (22-5, 11-3) kept pace with Purdue, which is also 11-3 in Big Ten play. Maryland will close the regular season with three of its final four games at Xfinity Center, beginning Feb. 22 against Minnesota. The Terps, however, still lack a signature victory after their loss at Wisconsin.
Trimble led Maryland with 27 points on 9-of-17 shooting and 4-of-7 from 3-point range. He was uncharacteristically 5-of-10 from the free-throw line and turned the ball over four times, but Trimble was the reason Maryland had a lead at halftime and stayed within striking distance of the Badgers in the second half. Trimble has combined for 59 points during the past two games.
