Johns Hopkins midfielder Joel Tinney has brought a new dimension back to the team.
With the game tied, 7-7, midway through the third quarter against Navy Feb. 7, Tinney appeared to flip the ball to fellow midfielder John Crawley to set the attack. As Crawley drew the attention of the defense and Midshipmen freshman goalie Ryan Kern, Tinney actually kept the ball hidden in his stick.
From there, Tinney fired a 30-yard shot that went into the goal, sparking No. 8 Johns Hopkins to an eventual 15-8 victory during the season opener. Tinney earned his sixth career hat trick and added two assists against the 10th-ranked Midshipmen. He then added another goal during a 15-5 victory against UMBC Feb. 11.
