There are two open spots in the Orioles' bullpen, and Oliver Drake is a candidate for one of them. As manager Buck Showalter pointed out at this month's minicamp in Sarasota, Fla., Drake is out of options, and the right-hander, who turned 30 Jan. 13, must be considered for one of the openings.
While managers and general managers say they'll take their "best 25" north with them, they often debate whether a player with options should be taken instead of one who doesn't have any.
Drake's situation isn't unique. Francisco Pena, who will vie for the backup catching position, is also out of options, while Caleb Joseph, the incumbent, has options remaining.
