There will be plenty of time -- a season, or perhaps two -- to evaluate the catching abilities of Welington Castillo. After today, it will be all about Castillo and how he works with the pitching staff.
But, for now, it's time for us to finally appreciate catcher Matt Wieters.
Wieters' time with the Baltimore Orioles is presumably over, barring a return in the future, which manager Buck Showalter referred to during Dec. 16's conference call introducing Castillo as the new starting catcher.
Wieters came to the Orioles as the fifth-overall pick in the 2007 draft and finally signed just before the Aug. 15 deadline. Andy MacPhail, who became the team's top baseball man shortly after Wieters was drafted, was able to work on a deal with agent Scott Boras, and the hype began.
