Baltimore's newest sports franchise, a yet unnamed entry in the Arena Football League, may represent more than just another startup sports enterprise facing the traditional challenge of vying for fans' attention and support.
The new indoor football team -- whose formation was announced Nov. 14 and will begin play during the spring at the Royal Farms Arena in downtown Baltimore -- is yet another move by Washington-based Monumental Sports and Entertainment to capture the millennial demographic.
Monumental Sports and Entertainment (MSE), whose chairman and CEO is Ted Leonsis, is best known for its ownership of the NBA's Washington Wizards, the NHL's Washington Capitals, the WNBA's Washington Mystics and Washington, D.C.'s major sports arena, the Verizon Center. But earlier this year, MSE also became co-owner of a company that has controlling interest in an eSports franchise, Team Liquid, and last month, MSE announced the creation of Monumental Sports Network, which will stream a variety of sports content, including live game action, to users through computers and mobile devices.
