Steve Nichols remembers when the Loyola men's soccer program advanced to the NCAA tournament quarterfinals during the 1986 and 1987 seasons. Nichols, a former Loyola player who was hired as the Greyhounds' head coach in 2014, wants to return his alma mater to that elite level.
The former McDonogh School coach watched the Greyhounds struggle to a 7-21-6 record during his first two years at the helm. But the 2016 team, buoyed by the arrival of a talented group of freshmen, has started to turn the program around.
"We put the first piece of the puzzle together with this class," Nichols said. "We knew that it was a very talented group coming in, and the young guys are starting to figure it out."
