GOP Candidate for Mayor of Baltimore Diagnosed with Cancer

Alan Walden, the former Baltimore radio news anchor who won the Republican nomination for mayor in April’s primary, announced that he was diagnosed with cancer late last week.

In a Facebook post, the 80-year-old Walden said that doctors’ discovery of the bladder cancer “happened at an early enough stage that successful treatment is highly likely.” He is undergoing surgery this week, and no other treatment is currently foreseen.

“The vigor of my candidacy remains undiminished,” he wrote. “I am determined to be the next mayor of Baltimore, a great city lacking only the right leadership. I will be temporarily sidelined but this will not keep me from working to be your next mayor.”
