Patterson Mill has the newest baseball program in Harford County.
When the school opened in 2007, Patterson Mill fielded a JV team only that spring. It wasn't until the school's second year of existence that it had its first varsity program.
There were growing pains, including that first varsity season without any seniors. The home field was also a mess, featuring little league backstops, four-foot fencing and a six-foot tree in the middle of it. Matt Roseland, who is the only varsity baseball head coach in Patterson Mill's history, saw the program's birth as a golden opportunity, rather than an uphill battle.
"You don't have to change a program's culture, you get to create it the way you want it," Roseland said. "You have to come in knowing what you want to do. I met with a lot of county coaches asking them what worked, took all the good things they shared and put my own twist on it."
